Interactions Under the Desk: A Characterisation of Foot Movements for Input in a Seated Position
نویسندگان
چکیده
We characterise foot movements as input for seated users. First, we built unconstrained foot pointing performance models in a seated desktop setting using ISO 9241-9-compliant Fitts’s Law tasks. Second, we evaluated the effect of the foot and direction in one-dimensional tasks, finding no effect of the foot used, but a significant effect of the direction in which targets are distributed. Third, we compared one foot against two feet to control two variables, finding that while one foot is better suited for tasks with a spatial representation that matches its movement, there is little difference between the techniques when it does not. Fourth, we analysed the overhead caused by introducing a feetcontrolled variable in a mouse task, finding the feet to be comparable to the scroll wheel. Our results show the feet are an effective method of enhancing our interaction with desktop systems and derive a series of design guidelines.

Receding Horizon Based Control of Disturbed Upright Balance with Consideration of Foot Tilting(RESEARCH NOTE)
In some situations, when an external disturbance occurs, humans can rock stably backward and forward by lifting the toe or the heel to keep the upright balance without stepping. Many control schemes have been proposed for standing balance control under external disturbances without stepping. But, in most of them researchers have only considered a flat foot phase. In this paper a framework is pr...
متن کاملThe Effects of Modified Ankle Foot Orthosis on balance in Healthy Older People
Introduction: Balance impairment and related injuries are common in elderly and patients with neurologic disorders. Ankle foot orthosies can influence on balance via improvement of movement disorders. Therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of modified ankle-foot orthosis on balance performance in healthy elderly. Materials & Methods: The research was conducted on ten ...
متن کاملSlider-based Foot Input Devices: Methods for Stand-up Mousing
This technical note presents a novel plastic-slider based mouse input device which may be used as a classical hand mouse (on a pad) or as a foot mouse (typically, on carpet). Our motivation is two-fold: first to understand the imagined versus feasible design space of constrained and unconstrained input technologies, and then to propose a novel sliding-based input device which we explicitly desi...
